A second opportunity to provide input into beef Code of Practice renewal

(Ottawa) 04 July 2012 – Beef producers have another opportunity to provide input into the redevelopment of the beef cattle Code of Practice by participating in a new on-line survey on routine management practices, such as animal identification (branding), dehorning, and castration. To complete this confidential 10-minute survey, go to www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/beef-cattle and click on surveys. The first survey, which examines awareness of and attitudes towards the beef Code, is also available on this page.

The redevelopment of the beef cattle Code is part of a National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) multi-year project to renew several of the Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals. The beef Code Development Committee is comprised of producers, animal welfare and enforcement organizations, the research community, the transport and processing industries, and government.

“Now over half-way through its mandate, the beef Code Committee is seeking input on several key animal management practices in order to create guidelines that are both relevant and practical,” explains Ryder Lee, industry liaison on the Beef Cattle Code of Practice Committee and Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) Manager of Federal and Provincial Relations. “This is an important part of the process, have your say – complete the survey."

This confidential survey is one tool that will help ensure we get full participation from all stakeholders. Your privacy will be protected.  At the end of the survey you will have the option to enter your email address in order to receive updates on the Code development process, if you wish.

More information on the Code development process and progress on the various Codes under development are available from NFACC’s website (www.nfacc.ca).

Funding for the Codes of Practice is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Flexibility Fund (Addressing Domestic and International Market Expectations Relative to Farm Animal Welfare), as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
