(Ottawa) May 9, 2013 – Registration is now open for the 2013 National Farm Animal Care Conference, being held October 9 and 10 at the Hilton Garden Inn Ottawa. Insightful speakers from across the food value chain and beyond will present on progress made with the Codes of Practice, the Animal Care Assessment Model and on a variety of key topics shaping the world of farm animal welfare today. Registration and agenda are available at www.nfacc.ca/conferences.

“We are thrilled to have a line up of speakers that are sure to spur dialogue with their thought provoking messages,” says Jackie Wepruk, National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) General Manager.

The agenda includes speakers with parallel experiences beyond the animal welfare spectrum. Stephani McCallum, Managing Director of Dialogue Partners Inc., will speak to managing diverse views in animal welfare. Stephani specializes in civic engagement in situations of high emotion, conflict or controversy. Stephani has worked on complex issues ranging from indigenous rights, participatory budgeting, education, land use, health care, transportation, natural disasters, nuclear waste and environmental issues, and is the recipient of a number of national and international awards for her ground-breaking work.

Jeff Ansell, media and crisis communication consultant and author, will speak on communication strategies for an animal welfare crisis. Jeff has created a refreshing approach for compelling communications that is both practical and principled. He will bring new insights to real communications issues. Jeff is the author of When the Headline Is You: An Insider's Guide to Handling the Media.

“This conference will do more than just provide a broad array of perspectives. We are setting the course, demonstrating disciplined action that has, and will, make positive changes to the well-being of farm animals, and enhance communication to the public on farm animal care,” states Edouard Asnong, NFACC Chair. “Let’s work together to ensure Canada remains a world leader in animal welfare. The 2013 National Farm Animal Care Conference is an event not to be missed.”

This one and a half day conference is organized and hosted by Canada’s lead organization for collaborative animal care initiatives, the National Farm Animal Care Council.

Funding for the Codes of Practice is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) through the Agricultural Flexibility Fund, as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
