The public comment period for the amendments to the mink Code of Practice ends February 4, 2021

REMINDER NOTICE: The proposed amendments to the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink are available for public comment until February 4th . The National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) and Canada Mink Breeders Association announced the launch of the public comment period on December 7, 2020.

The draft amendments can be viewed and submissions made through NFACC’s web site at www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/farmed-mink. All comments must be submitted through the online platform, for which easy to follow instructions are provided.

The amendment includes proposed changes to requirements and recommendations for housing, handling, body condition, and euthanasia. Participants can comment on all amended sections or easily navigate to sections most of interest to them. This is an important opportunity for all stakeholders with an interest in the welfare of farmed mink to contribute to the amended Code of Practice.

Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals are the result of a unique consensus-based, multi-stakeholder approach used across various agricultural sectors. The amendments to the farmed mink Code are led by a diverse group of experts, notably producers from across Canada, government, animal welfare researchers, veterinarians, and auditors.

After the comment period, the Code Committee will consider all input, and the final Code is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2021. More information on the Code development process is available at nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice.

Funding for this project has been provided through the AgriAssurance Program under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal–provincial–territorial initiative.
